About Us
Our Freehouse and Restaurant is named after a famous British General whose family lived in the area.

The front of the Marquis, LayhamCharles Cornwallis was born on December 31st 1738 and died on October 5th 1805.

In 1775 he accepted military command as Major General and was sent to America. British General Cornwallis achieved initial success against the American Continental Army in the American Revolution. But General George Washington with the aid of the French fleet, surrounded Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia and forced Cornwallis to surrender, ensuring an American Victory in the War.

From the A12 - Leaving at junction 31, signposted Hadleigh and East Bergholt, take the B1070 towards Hadleigh. After approximately 3 miles you will see the Marquis on the left as you enter the beautiful hamlet of Upper Layham.

From London - leave the M25 at the A12/Brentwood turn off, junction 28. Follow signs for Chelmsford, Colchester and Ipswich.

Nearest mainline station - Ipswich, 15 minutes from the Inn. Direct train service to London Liverpool Street.
